TomTom has announced a new portable GPS navigator engineered specifically for travelers, made unique by integrating third-party apps from Expedia, TripAdvisor, Twitter, and Yelp. Being a "Live" device, the 1535M can also provide real-time traffic information, fuel prices, weather forecasts, and Local Search.
Of course, it could be argued that all dashtop navigators are intended for travelers, but this one bundles a few interesting features and a real twist with the applications. For example, the Twitter app allows the user to send a pre-set message when they leave announcing a destination, and the device can send an update, with an adjusted arrival time, as necessary. The function is option, and despite the implied distraction the name "Twitter" implies, as described, this is a one-way means of communication, not a means to follow a Twitter feed.
This traveler-targeting navigator includes maps for Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Starting at $250, the well-equipped device has upscale features such as lane guidance, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice recognition. Lifetime maps are included.
For travel-centric devices, they are not the most luggage-friendly size with 5-inch screens.
These devices mark an interesting turn for portable navigators, enabling them to expand their functionality through add-on software, much like has been seen with smartphone applications. The TomTom Go Live 2535M will also be able to download the travel apps through a software update scheduled for this fall.
The Go Live 1530 and Go Live 1535 will become available in October. Once on sale, we'll put them into our GPS test program.
Before then, we have a significant ratings update planned for the days ahead, featuring an armload of new devices from Garmin and TomTom.
Travelers might also consider recent Magellan navigators with helpful AAA information and exit guides, such as the Magellan RoadMate 3055 (4.7-inch screen) and Magellan RoadMate 3055 (4.3-inch screen).
