There are more than 250,000 apps in the Android Market, but only a small fraction of them account for the majority of app use.
The 10 most-used Android apps accounted for 39 percent of all time spent on apps in June, according to new data from Nielsen. The total jumps to 61 percent when you account for the 50 most-used apps. That means that about 249,950 apps are competing for the remaining 39 percent of the pie.
The data also showed that the average Android-device user spends 56 minutes per day using the Web and apps. Two-thirds of that time—a little more than 37 minutes—is spent on apps, with the remaining time spent surfing the Web.
Nielsen told PC World that it published the results based on its own data, not the apps that were listed as top-sellers in the Android Market. The company also said it had no plans to release data on iOS app usage.
The Android Market has experienced a surge in downloads as of late. Google, which owns Android, said at the end of June that more than 4.5 billion apps had been downloaded from the online store since it opened in October 2008. Furthermore, while it took two years to reach a billion downloads, the last billion downloads from the Android Market happened in just 60 days.
