On Monday, Honda Motor Co. announced it was recalling certain model year Honda CR-V compact SUVs and Honda CR-Z hybrid vehicles for two separate safety issues. In total, more than 85,000 Honda vehicles are affected with these safety concerns.
The first recall involves 2006 model year Honda CR-Vs. According to Honda, a faulty design of the SUV's power window master switch may allow residue from interior window cleaners to accumulate on the switch. Over time, the electrical contacts on the switch will degrade from the chemical residue, overheat and possibly catch fire. No injuries or deaths have been reported to Honda, however, the company believes approximately 80,111 Honda CR-Vs are affected by this faulty power window switch.
The second recall involves the 2011 CR-Z hybrids sold in the U.S. with manual transmissions. A glitch in computer programming may inadvertently tell the hybrid's electric motor to operate opposite to the gear manually selected by the driver. This could cause the hybrid to roll in opposite directions—move forward, even though the transmission is in "reverse" to back out of a parking spot, for example—and cause a collision. Again, no deaths or injuries have been tied to this safety issues, but approximately 5,656 CR-Z are believed to be affected by this software error.
Honda says it will begin to notify owners of CR-V and CR-Z vehicles later this month. Mechanics at local Honda dealerships will replace the CR-V's faulty window switches and reprogram the CR-Z's software code free of charge.
