John Deere recalls four lawn tractors with faulty hardware

Consumer Reports News: September 14, 2011 11:38 AM

John Deere has recalled four models of lawn tractors because the hardware that holds the brake assembly to the deck can break presenting a laceration hazard. One model, the D100, is also being recalled because the hardware that holds the brake assembly to the transmission can break, causing loss of control. John Deere is asking mower owners to stop using the mowers and contact the company for a free hardware inspection and repair.

The lawn tractors in question include the D100, D110, D120 and D130. See the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for the range of serial numbers. The second D100 recall includes additional serial numbers that can also be found on the recall notice. Some D100s are being recalled for both hazards. There have been no reported incidents.

Consumer Reports has tested the D110 lawn tractor and, in fact, named it a CR Best Buy in our current lawn mower Ratings. Made in the U.S.A., the mowers were sold at John Deere dealers, Lowe's, and Home Depot stores nationwide from October 2010 through September 2011 for between $1,500 and $2,000. (The D100 was not sold in California.)

Mower owners should contact Deere & Company at (800) 537-8233 or visit the firm's website at www.johndeere.com for more information.

Update. Today Kubota recalled several models of riding mowers because the clamp for the fuel hose can detach from the fuel filter, allowing gas to leak out. For full details, read the recall notice from the CPSC.
