Logitech Harmony app will convert mobile devices into universal remote controls

Logitech's Harmony universal remote controls have been well received among home theater buffs. Now, the company is set to offer mobile devices the same set of smarts in controlling home entertainment gear as well.

The company announced today its $100 Logitech Harmony Link, a software app and hardware combo set to hit U.S. store shelves next month. The app, designed to work with any device running Apple's iOS operating system or smart phones using Google's Android software, essentially mimics the functions of traditional Harmony universal remote controls. However, signals from the Link app are sent to the hockey puck-sized Logitech hardware via a wireless home network. The puck then converts the commands into the appropriate infra-red signals used by most remote controls to communicate with home entertainment gear such as surround-sound receivers.

The Link app for Apple iPad tablets offers additional capabilities, such as an interactive program guide supplied by Rovi. Simply tapping on a program listing will turn on the HDTV, select the correct input and tune the cable or satellite TV service receiver to the correct station, says Logitech.

The setup will allow owners to control up to eight pieces of audio-video components.
