Mog and Rdio add free online streaming music options

Do you remember the good old days when listening to music on the Internet was free and easy? Well, those good old days are back—legally.

Mog, announced today that it has launched FreePlay—an advertisement-free service to its subscription-based digital music streaming service. New users will get an online "gas tank" that can be filled with digital tunes from the company's library of 12 million songs, which can then be played on a Web browser. FreePlay members can keep filling their online tank with more music by sharing their song choices with friends on Facebook, making online playlists or "exploring Mog," the company said in its official press release.

Rdio, another subscription-based streaming music service, is also said to be working on a similar free-version. Although details haven't been fleshed out yet, a spokesman e-mailed PCMag.com:

Continuing on its first-to-market strategy, Rdio will soon be launching free access to its music catalogue without advertising... Rdio free access users will have access to all of Rdio's content (over 11 million songs and growing), including exclusives.

Both free services are seen as means of persuading digital music lovers to try the respective services—and possibly opt for for-pay plans, which offer additional premiums. Mog's $10 per month plan, for example, extends the streaming ad-free experience to other devices such as smart phones and Net-connected TVs.

Moreover, many industry watchers see the move by both companies as a response to the free Spotify service, which launched in the U.S. in July, and as a possible pre-emptive strike against the possibility of Facebook launching an online music service as well.

We'll be keeping our eye out for further developments.
