Q&A: Are most LED bulbs made in the U.S.?

Consumer Reports News: September 12, 2011 04:52 PM

A: The semiconductor chips in LEDs are made in the U.S, and final assembly of the bulbs is often done here, according to Alex Boesenberg, manager of regulatory affairs for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, a trade group representing lightbulb manufacturers. But he adds that as LEDs are produced on a larger scale, manufacturing will likely take place wherever it's most cost effective. The majority of CFLs are made in China and most incandescents are no longer made in the U.S.

Of the 10 LEDs we recently tested, only the top-rated EcoSmart floodlight was made in America. Seven of the bulbs were made in China and two were assembled in the U.S. After 3,000 hours of testing, the best LEDs we tested were still as bright as the incandescents they're meant to replace. Find out which are worth paying extra for by checking our Ratings of LEDs and CFLs.
