Recall: Romaine lettuce—possible Listeria contamination

True Leaf Farms in California recalled 90 cartons of chopped romaine lettuce this week due to possible contamination from Listeria, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall was announced after a sample taken as part of a random check from a single bag of lettuce tested positive for Listeria. No illnesses have been reported in relation to this recall.

Packed in True Leaf Farms cardboard cartons, the recalled bags of romaine were distributed by Church Brothers, which shipped the bags to an Oregon-based distribution center between Sept. 12 and 13, and were distributed to at least two additional states: Idaho and Washington. All bags carry a use by date of Sept. 29, 2011, and are labeled with the following: 2# bags, chopped romaine - Bag and box code B256-46438-8.

If you've purchased the recalled lettuce, the FDA says you should not eat it, but instead you should either destroy it or throw it out, or call Church Brothers, LLC the sales agent for True Leaf Farms, at 1-800-799-9475, for product pickup.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause food poisoning, and the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems are the most likely to be sickened by the bacteria.

Cantaloupes contaminated with Listeria, recently lead to what is being called the deadliest outbreak of a foodborne illness in the United States for more than a decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
