Your choices in digital video and entertainment will increase by one more option next month: That's when Sony plans to begin selling its latest streaming-video set-top box, the SMP-N200.
The $100 streaming-media player is an update to the Sony Netbox, introduced last year to compete against the likes of Boxee Box, Apple TV, and other digital set-top boxes. The new SMP-N200 box adds 3D content—for HDTVs with 3D TV capabilities—as well as DLNA, which allows the box to access and control digital media from other devices such as desktop computers and tablets.
Sony's set-top box is one of the latest entries into the burgeoning field of entertainment options. Last week also saw the announcements of Netgear's NeoTV set-top box as well as Channel Master's set-top DVR for recording free over-the-air HDTV programs. Additionally, an increasing number of HDTVs and Blu-ray players are featuring Internet connectivity to create so-called "smart TVs."
Video-game consoles are also capable of streaming digital entertainment options from the likes of Netflix. And at a recent analysts conference, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer hinted that the company's popular Xbox 360 system may soon offer a live TV service called Xbox TV.
