Sprint today filed a lawsuit opposing AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile, stating that such a merger would violate the Clayton Anti-Trust Act and is an illegal transaction. The $39 billion deal would have made AT&T the largest cell-phone provider.
The suit was filed before the federal judge who received a similar one last week, filed by the Department of Justice, according to CNet. In its suit, the DOJ said that if the deal between AT&T and T-Mobile were allowed to go forward, it would "substantially lessen competition for mobile wireless telecommunications services." In a statement, AT&T said it would fight the suit in court.
Consumers Union. the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, also does not support the merger. Consumers should celebrate the Department of Justice's announcement that it will file an anti-trust lawsuit against the proposed merger of A&T and T-Mobile, said Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union.
