At the Let's Talk iPhone event in Cupertino, Apple rolled out its new online storage service, iCloud. The previously announced service will be available as a free download starting October 12th. iCloud enables users of the iPhone and other Apple hardware to upload their photos, music, and other files to Apple's servers, where they can be shared with other devices linked to your account.
iCloud will also enable iPhone users, for the first time, to perform OS upgrades without physically connecting to the phone their computers for an iTunes sync. The service is largely free, but you will have to pay $20 a year for 10GB, $40 a year for 20GB and $100 a year for 50GB.
Apple also launched iOS 5, which it had previewed at its Worldwide Developers conference back in June. The new system will be available as a free upgrade for iPhone users.
The new iOS borrows heavily from Facebook, Amazon, and the Android, BlackBerry, and Windows operating systems.
New features include: the ability to use the camera and to preview new e-mails, calendar appointments, and text messages, even when the phone screen is locked (Windows Phone OS); contact lists that will now integrate data from a variety of sources (Android); and a Game Center will now show you what your friends' friends are doing while providing game recommendations based on their activities and habits (Facebook).
