Apple's stylishly thin Macbook Air received some new competition from Taiwanese computer maker Asus. At a press conference in Manhattan today, Asus unveiled its Zenbook Ultrabook portable PCs.
The UX21 will be $999; it has an 11.6-inch display, an Intel Core i5 processor, and a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD). It'll weigh in at just 2.42 pounds and is claimed to have a 5-hour battery life and to stay powered for a week in standby mode.
The higher-end UX31, at $1,099, has a 13.3-inch display capable of 1,600x900 pixel resolution, a 256GB SSD, USB 3.0 ports, and a memory card reader. Its claimed battery life is 7 hours and will last up to 10 days in standby. Asus says both Zenbooks turn on in 2 seconds.
Ultrabooks are new laptops defined by a specification from Intel that are meant to be thinner, lighter, and less expensive than most laptops. Both Asus Zenbooks arrive at retail tomorrow, October 12.
