Just a couple months after announcing it intended to spin off its personal-computer unit, new HP president and CEO Meg Whitman said that the move would not happen. And in fact, said Whitman, HP may resume making tablet computers as well, following the fire-sale success of its TouchPad.
In a statement yesterday, Whitman explained the about-face in strategy:
HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG [Personal Systems Group]. It's clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees. HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.
HP noted that its PSG is "the no. 1 manufacturer of personal computers in the world with revenues totaling $40.7 billion for fiscal year 2010." Indeed, in Consumer Reports Ratings of computers, models from HP are generally good performers and frequently land in our list of Recommended computers.
As for the HP TouchPad, the tablet computer debuted earlier this year to lackluster sales; but when HP decided to discontinue the tablet and slashed its price, TouchPads began to sell like hotcakes. We recently reported that the company is planning a second round of TouchPad production to meet consumer demand for the tablet.
