JVC GC-PX10: A camcorder that looks like a camera

JVC is following Sony into the world of hybrid gadgets today with its new GC-PX10 camcorder, which was announced as a concept product in January at CES. If camera manufacturers such as Kodak can produce camcorders, it shouldn't be a surprise that camcorder companies are coming out with camcorders that look like cameras; Sony is already on its second-generation "hybrid" camcorder, which accepts SLR lenses.

What's intriguing about the JVC GC-PX10 at first glance is its shape: It looks rather like a superzoom or one of Sony's NEX SLR-like cameras, particularly since it includes an L-shape design and a swiveling LCD that flips up instead of out to the side of the camera body, as on most full-size camcorders.

Here are some other notable features:

    • Records full HD-resolution video at 1920x1080 at 60p.

    • Very robust still-photo burst modes: 60 frames per second at 8 megapixels or 30 fps at 12 megapixels.

    • Can capture an 8-megapixel still photo while simultaneously recording full HD video.

    • Has a 300-fps "super slow motion" video mode (at 640 x 480 VGA resolution).

    • Includes a 10x optical zoom lens.

    • Has 32GB of internal memory, plus an SDXC/SDHC card slot for expanding memory.
The JVC GC-PX10 will be available this month for $900.
