Magellan updates RoadMate iPhone navigation app, adds reality view and safety alerts

Consumer Reports News: October 14, 2011 10:23 AM

Enthusiastic Apple customers queuing today for their new iPhone 4S have a freshened navigation app to consider, the revised Magellan RoadMate version 2.2. This update adds reality view, red light and fix speed camera alerts, and the latest maps.

This new version is compatible with iPhone 4S, 4, or 3GS, and with iOS 4.2 or later. Following the release of iOS 5, Magellan plans to provide a further update to ensure compatibility. All current RoadMate app users will receive a free update to this version, now available through the iTunes store at $39.99 for the USA edition and $49.99 for the USA/Canada edition.

The reality view feature, called "Junction View" by Magellan, allows the app to provide graphic representations of major intersections—a feature that has become common on other name-brand apps and dashtop GPS devices.

The red light and speed camera alerts are included. With an in app purchase, RoadMate 2.2 can provide safety alerts for school zones, railroad crossings, speed bumps, dangerous curves and intersections, speed traps, and live traffic camera feeds.

We expect other, major app providers will be rolling out updates soon that take advantage of new features found in the iPhone 4S and iOS5. Consumer Reports shoppers are buying phones today, and we plan to evaluate several nav apps in the weeks ahead.
