Motorola announces Droid RAZR: Android-based, 4G, super-thin smart phone

Consumer Reports News: October 18, 2011 12:56 PM

At a press event in New York today, Motorola announced a new smart phone to add to its stable: The Droid RAZR features a 4.3-inch Super Amoled qHD display (the resolution is 540 by 960) and an 8-megapixel camera. It weighs in at 127 grams, and is just 7.1mm thick. And the Droid RAZR will run on Verizon's speedy 4G LTE network; it's the thinnest 4G phone so far.

The new RAZR runs on a dual-core 1.2-GHz CPU and features 1GB of RAM. It can record HD video at 1080p, and it's the first phone that can download HD video from Netflix.

The Droid RAZR is well protected, with laser-cut Kevlar fiber on the outside, Gorilla glass on front, and a splash guard, to protects the phone from liquid spills.

Motorola claims 12.5 hours of 3G talk time for the new RAZR and 8.9 hours of video time. An app called WebTop is included: It lets you view phone content on a big screen with a Firefox browser. And a feature called Smart Actions saves energy on the phone: If it's at 20 percent battery life, Smart Actions will dim the screen, slow down data usage, or reduce processor speed.

The company also announced MotoCast, which it calls "the concept of the personal cloud": You can access content from your PC to the Droid RAZR from wherever you are. You'll also be able to stream out from the phone via HDMI.

The Droid RAZR will work with the Lapdock, like the Motorola Droid Bionic and Atrix phones.

You'll be able to use the phone for work, too: You can edit Office documents, and the Droid RAZR will have full corporate security support. Also included are Citrix Receiver and GoToMeeting, as well as videoconferencing with HD Webcast.

We filed this from the event and hope to get some hands-on time with the Droid RAZR; check back here for our first impressions. And of course, we'll review and Rate it as soon as possible.

You can pre-order the Droid RAZR on October 27th; it goes on sale in November at $300.
