Navigon launches navigation app for Windows Phone 7

Consumer Reports News: October 11, 2011 05:38 PM

Navigon has released the first on-board navigation app for Windows Phone 7, giving users an alternative to Bing maps from a top-tier company. The application contains all mapping and information to allow users to navigate even when no cell signal is available, just like with standalone, dashtop devices.

As with a traditional navigator, or Navigon app for other smartphone platforms, the Windows 7 version provides turn-by-turn directions, with visual lane guidance and traffic information.

Notable features include reality view and lane assistance to graphically reproduce major intersections and advise on the appropriate lane to take. There is a speed warning when the car is exceeding the current speed limit. Traffic information from Inrix can provide intelligence for route planning and aid in avoiding trouble spots.

A clever, new feature called "Reality Scanner" allows the user to point the smartphone in any direction to see points-of-interest icons appear onscreen in a live camera view. It sounds like a handy feature for when touring a new city, especially around meal time, though use in the car may be distracting.

Navigon for Windows Phone 7 includes full U.S. maps. It will retail for $50, though it is available through November 15 for $30.

In addition, Navigon is offering traffic4all, a free traffic application that indicates traffic flow rates and problems. A clever touch, the app can be set to check traffic for a specific time and location, say to check on your commute route just before leaving work. The free version uses on-screen advertising. An upgrade is available for $1.49 that turns off the ads.
