Fine art enthusiasts might scoff at picking a painting because it matches the sofa. But choosing an interior paint color inspired by the modern masters is far more palatable, following the Guggenheim Museum's launch of a paint color collection based on the works of Paul Cézanne, Giorgio de Chirico, Vincent van Gogh, and other champions of the canvas.
The New York City museum partnered with Fine Paints of Europe, a Vermont-based coatings company, which matched the 150 masterful hues and created the final formulations. Painting your bedroom van Gogh blue or Cézanne yellow won't be cheap. The Classical Colors fan deck alone costs $100 and the paints themselves costs as much as $130 per can.
The proceeds will be shared by the Guggenheim, so you'll be supporting the arts. But if you'd rather save your money for an actual museum visit, you could choose a less expensive coating from out latest interior paint Ratings (CR Best Buys by Behr, Glidden, and Kilz cost between $17 and $26 dollars per gallon) and match it to a color from your favorite masterpiece. Many manufacturers have advanced color-matching technology that can custom mix virtually any hue, including one pulled from a post card of a famous painting. They also have apps that let you snap a picture of any object and match it to the closest color in their collection.
Just be sure to choose a paint formula that resists fading if it will be applied to a sunny space, otherwise your timeless color could end in a wash out.
