Harley-Davidson is recalling certain Touring, CVO Touring, and Trike motorcycles from model years 2009 through 2012 because of a faulty rear brake light, and a potential brake fluid leak that could affect rear brake performance.
The rear brake light switch may be exposed to excessive heat from the exhaust system, which can cause the switch to either not activate the brake lamp, or activate the brake lamp when the rear brake is not being applied. The exposure to excessive heat can also cause a brake fluid leak at the brake light switch, affecting the performance of the rear brake and increasing the risk of a crash.
The list of 250,757 recalled Harley-Davidson bikes includes the following models:
The Harley-Davidson safety recall number is 0145. The recalled bikes were manufactured between June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011.
Harley-Davidson will begin its safety recall on or around Oct. 31, and dealers will install a kit for the rear brake light switch for free. For more information, owners can call Harley-Davidson at 414-343-4056, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit www.Safercar.gov.
