TomTom users who happen to be fans of the BBC's Top Gear television program will be pleased to hear that the GPS maker has just released a navigation device with followers of the show in mind.
Based on the TomTom Go Live 820, the TomTom Go Live Top Gear edition features a POI menu that includes race tracks and other locations featured on the show. Of course, directions to U.K. racetracks and show locations throughout Europe may not be so important to TomTom users from Peoria. Special start up and shut down screens, Top Gear car icons, and the voice of star Jeremy Clarkson providing turn-by turn guidance add personality to the device. It also features a Stig mode, named for Top Gear's mysterious and silent race driver. The Stig mode apparently won't do a thing to improve a driver's ability behind the wheel, but it will render the device silent—much like The Stig himself—if listening to Jezza becomes tiresome. Think of Stig mode as muting with style.
Other features include TomTom's improved HD traffic service that includes secondary roads and has data updated every two minutes, Bluetooth for hands-free calls, voice recognition, lane guidance, a Help Me emergency services menu, and one year of TomTom Live connected services with Google search, weather, fuel prices, and more.
If all that isn't enough for fans of the hit show, TomTom is also offering a contest that promises to send winners to a track day with The Stig on the Top Gear set.
Priced at $269.95, TomTom Go Live Top Gear edition is available now. But the company says it is a limited edition, so act fast, fans.
Update 10/17/11: It turns out, this is a very limited edition. According to a report in The Guardian, the BBC has called for a halt on production due to a breech in editorial policy. A total of 54,000 units had been built, and the BBC will donate its proceeds to charity.
