Some of us here at Consumer Reports have found Nissan's unique Around-View Monitor handy. But until now, it's been available only on very expensive luxury cars and SUVs.
For 2012, Nissan is making the feature standard on up-level SL trim levels of its Rogue small SUV. The Around-View Monitor uses the navigation screen to show a bird's eye view of the car and its surroundings as you're backing into or out of parking spaces at low speeds. It shows on a split screen next to the backup camera. You can also turn on the system when you're moving forward using a button on the dashboard. The system uses four cameras, one in the grille, one under each side mirror, and the backup camera to show the car's surroundings. It automatically turns itself off above a few miles per hour.
The 2012 Rogue is on sale now. A front-wheel-drive SL with the Around-View Monitor will set you back at least $27,031, according to our TrueCar pricing service. Not exactly cheap, but hardly luxury SUV territory, either.
