Ever since Procter & Gamble un-supersized its laundry detergents three years ago, detergent makers have been putting their products in smaller packages and trying such other innovations as single-use capsules. The goal, of course, is to sell more soap but the compacted detergents also save space on shelves and in shipping containers. But do they clean as well? In Consumer Reports tests of laundry detergents, we found that some do and some don't.
Dropps 6X Concentrated is a single-dose capsule that dissolves in the washer. But when we dropped a Dropps in the laundry it was only fair at getting clothes clean, did not remove blood but did well at removing grass stains. At 23 cents a load, you're better off buying our top-rated high-efficiency detergent, Tide HE Plus Bleach Alternative, which costs the same. Next spring Tide is introducing its own single-dose detergent called Tide Pods.
With manufacturers continually tweaking their laundry formulas, it's wise to pay heed to the level of concentration. If you use the same amount of 3X as you do of 2X, you may end up overdosing, resulting in a sudsy mess.
