Report: B&N may introduce a Nook tablet, drop prices on e-readers

Consumer Reports News: November 04, 2011 12:23 PM

On Monday, Barnes & Noble is expected to make a slew of announcements regarding its line of Nook digital e-book readers—and possibly introduce a tablet computer, according to several tech websites.

The main event will reportedly center around a new $249 Nook Tablet, says Engadget, which cited documents it had obtained that detail B&N's planned Monday announcements. According to those (apparently leaked) B&N documents, the new tablet computer will outwardly resemble the 7-inch Nook Color e-reader, a model that scored very well in Consumer Reports' Ratings of E-book readers (available to subscribers).

The big difference: The Nook Tablet will be equipped with a faster, dual-core processor and offer double the amount of both storage and operating memory of the Nook Color. The boost in computing horsepower will presumably help in the tablet's reported ability to play streaming high-definition videos from Netflix and Hulu Plus.

The reported Barnes & Noble documents also note changes with its current Nook e-readers.

The Nook Color will reportedly drop $50 to $199, putting the color e-book reader in the same price range as Amazon's recently announced Kindle Fire tablet—due in customers' hands on November 15, about a week after B&N's Monday event. An update to the Nook Color's software will allow new and current owners access to more apps and content—including Hulu Plus, says Engadget.

The black-and-white Nook Simple Touch Reader may also see a price drop to $99 as well as updated software that promises "25 percent faster page turns than any other e-reader," according to the documents in Engadget's possession. That's still $20 more than Amazon's cheapest Kindle. But the Digital Reader website points out that unlike $79 Amazon Kindle with Special Offers, the touchscreen E Ink B&N e-reader won't include advertising.

Consumer Reports will be reporting from the official Barnes & Noble press event in New York City on Monday; it starts at 10 AM. Stay tuned!
