Verizon offers double the data limits at same price for LTE network customers

Consumer Reports News: November 09, 2011 03:13 PM

Verizon Wireless has changed the data plans for its new 4G phones by doubling their wireless monthly data limits while keeping prices the same. And both new and existing subscribers can take advantage of the deal.

Verizon says consumers who buy a new LTE-capable smart phone—such as the Motorola Droid Bionic, a top-rated model in Consumer Reports list of recommended smart phones—will be able to download twice the amount of wireless data than their plans' limits. The 2 GB for $30 per month Verizon plan, for example, would become a 4-GB-per-month plan with no increase in cost.

Å Verizon spokeswoman told Consumer Reports that the promotion will be offered "through the holiday season" and is mainly geared toward new customers looking for a new 4G smart phone, such as the HTC Thunderbolt. Surprisingly, though, current Verizon subscribers with a tiered 4G data plan can also be "grandfathered" into these new data-doubled plans, provided they call Verizon's customer service and request the change.

Subscribers can keep the new plans—as long as they remain a Verizon customer with a 4G LTE smart phone. But overage charges—$10 per megabyte of wireless data—still apply if you exceed the limits of your new, doubled data plan, said the spokeswoman.

Verizon's move comes at an interesting time. Our previous analysis has shown Verizon's tiered data plans won't change most Verizon smart phone users' monthly bill. However, faster LTE phones could entice users to consume much more wireless data per month and lead to unexpected bill shock.

What's more, top-rated 4G LTE phones can be found among Verizon's competitors, such as Sprint which continues to offer its subscribers unlimited wireless data for $30 per month.
