App review: State Capitals for Android

It's high season for politics, and if your school-age kids are keeping up with the 2012 election, they may also be curious about our national geography. If so, State Capitals for Android is an app that can help.

Even adults like me, who have not been tested on this material since the 11th grade, may find this find app useful. It's a simple deck of flashcards featuring the name, location, and capital of all 50 of the United States of America.

States can be arranged alphabetically, at random, or sorted by the ones you are having difficulty with. If you or your child is still struggling to remember that the capital of Vermont is Montpelier, you can leave the state unmarked as one you do not know yet. Then you can ask the app to sort your deck by quizzing you with the ones you know last and the ones you are still struggling with first.

For each state, you are presented with the name and shape of the state, as well as a map of the country showing where that state is located. You have to tap the card to get it to turn around to show the name of the capital. It might be nice if there were more information on each card, such as a state flower or animal—but then again, that might confuse children who are interested only in learning the capitals for upcoming exams.

State Capitals for Android is free, and more fun that it sounds. And it's far preferable to the way I studied for my geography tests (way back when!), which mainly involved staring at a map.
