Acer has introduced its Aspire S5 computer, which, at just 15mm thick, is being touted by the company as the world's thinnest ultrabook. The S5 weighs under 3 pounds, and boasts a 13.3-inch LCD display. Acer also announced the Timeline Ultra computer, which has a claimed battery life of 8 hours.
The Aspire S5 will include what Acer calls Acer Green Instant On technology, which the company says will allow the computer to resume from sleep mode in 1.5 seconds, without sacrificing battery life.
Acer is one of many computer companies expected to announce ultrabooks at CES. The computers, which compete with Apple's successful MacBook Air, are more powerful -- and more expensive -- than lightweight netbooks.
"The Ultrabook is much more than just a product segment," said Jim Wong, president of Acer Inc. "It's a new trend that will become the mainstream for mobile PCs, and customers will see the unique features gradually extended across Acer's notebook family."
The Aspire S5 is expected to be available in the second quarter of this year, while the Timeline will be available in the first quarter. Pricing has not been announced for either model.
When Consumer Reports tested Acer's earlier Aspire S3 ultrabook, we said it offered "very good performance and is fast and lightweight for its size."
Acer also announced a cloud-based storage service, AcerCloud, which will allow the company's customers to sync data across multiple computers.
