Mavia is a small box with GPS receiver and 3G-nework cellular access that plugs into your vehicle's OBD-II port, a connector found in every 1996 and newer vehicle. The OBD-II port can access information about your vehicle such as trouble codes (to interpret that dreaded check engine light), vehicle speed, and mileage. Mavia can access this data and send it to the Internet. So what? Well, a lot can be done with this information.
For instance, you could track a teen driver, or even put up a "geo-fence" that triggers an email alert when they venture out of a certain area or drive above a certain speed. If you are that teen, you can automatically check in with Facebook or FourSquare to tell your friends where you are. If your car gets stolen, you can easily locate it on a map. If the check-engine light comes on, you can read the trouble code and decode it online to see if the problem is serious. It can also send a message to family and/or friends if the system detects a "critical event," such as an accident.
The Mavia will be available later this year for less than $300, but you most likely won't need to pay a cent for the data plan. Instead, Mavizon will work with retailers and provide geo-targeted advertising and discount offers to the driver (when stopped) that are in the vicinity of the vehicle.
