Magellan is launching niche-oriented GPS devices at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), with the 7-inch RoadMate RV9145 for RV drivers and this new 5-inch RoadMate 5190T for commercial truck drivers. Both units share a variety of functions, though they are oriented toward specific uses.
The RoadMate 5190T enables customized routing, and it plans routes based on the vehicle height, weight, width, length and HAZMAT restrictions. Multi-destination routing allows the device to guide drivers through a busy day, with the user able to program the sequence or allow the device to plan the most fuel-efficient route. Free lifetime traffic can help avoid unnecessary delays. A detour function can help bypass roadway congestion.
A tracking log can record hours of service, mileage, and other factors that can be exported for company records and reporting.
In a further boon to truckers, the RoadMate 5190T has Bluetooth connectivity, augmented by a built-in speaker with output up to 93 dB to overcome engine and cabin noise.
As with other recent Magellans, the RoadMate 5190T includes A/V inputs that enable a back-up camera or other input, which truckers may use for video playback on protracted rest stops.
Not inexpensive, the RoadMate 5190T has a $380 retail price. Truck drivers should also consider the Garmin Dezl line, as well.
