Study: Tablet and e-reader ownership doubles over the holidays

Consumer Reports News: January 23, 2012 10:08 AM

Did you get a tablet computer or an e-book reader during the holidays? If you did, you're in good company.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, ownership of tablets and e-readers nearly doubled—from 10 to 19 percent—from the period between mid-December and January.

Growth in new ownership for either of these mobile devices was relatively flat during the 2011 autumn months. But the pollsters say the rapid changes in the electronics marketplace lead to a leap in holiday sales:

In the tablet world, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble’s Nook Tablet were introduced at considerably cheaper prices than other tablets. In the e-book reader world, some versions of the Kindle and Nook and other readers fell well below $100.

If you still can't decide which one is right for you, check out Consumer Reports' How to choose between a tablet computer and an e-book reader. And to find the right model for your need, check Consumer Reports Buying guide to tablet computers and e-book readers.
