Sony's new Cyber-shots have longer zooms and thinner bodies

Today Sony announced nine new cameras in its point-and-shoot Cyber-shot line, many of which sport long zoom lenses—even in models with smaller bodies. In fact, five of the new cameras are superzooms, which means their zoom ranges are 15x or greater: If you were photographing Mount Rushmore, for example, you could capture the fine details of Teddy Roosevelt's mustache.

Sony is also introducing models with thinner and smaller bodies that still include advanced features such as large touch-screen OLED displays and auto-focusing that Sony claims is very fast, even in low light.

All the new Cyber-Shots include either 16- or 18-megapixel sensors, which means you can produce very large prints or do a lot of cropping on your images. And all have displays that are 3 inches or larger and can capture HD video.

Here are a few of the most notable models:

    • The 18-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V ($480) has a very long, 30x optical zoom lens, a GPS feature for geotagging your photos, and a manual focus ring.
    • The 18-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V ( $420) includes Wi-Fi for wirelessly uploading photos to your computer. It also has a 20x optical zoom lens and a GPS feature for geotagging your photos.
    • The 18-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-TX66 ($350) is extremely thin (12.2 mm, or about half an inch), yet has a 3.3-inch touchscreen and a zoom lens that includes a very wide-angle capability (24mm). It has a 5x optical zoom.

The Cyber-shot HX200V, HX10, H90, and TX66 models will be available in March. The other five will be available in May.
