At Toy Fair 2012, Hasbro showed some of its classic board games—Battleship, Monopoly, and The Game of Life—mashed up with the Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch to add multimedia interactivity.
After purchasing the game, you download the game's app to your iPad, and place it on your game board. Each game piece is individually identified by the iPad so it can track players' progress in the game. In Monopoly, for example, the device becomes the bank; players scan bank cards to add or take away money from their individual accounts. (Beware, chronic Monopoly cheaters!) Monopoly zAPPed arrives in June.
The zAPPed version of The Game of Life integrates clips from "America's Funniest Videos" as well as a virtual spinner. It is available now, at $24.99. And in Battleship zAPPed, the iPad screen becomes the playing surface. You'll place your game piece on the screen, and the iPad recognizes it and tracks its movements. Battleship zAPPed comes in September.
