The latest new feature from OnStar is aimed at drivers who have ever found themselves asking the question: It's 10 o'clock. Do I know where my car is?
Introduced today, Family Link offers subscribers two ways to track the location of their vehicle:
Vehicle Locate lets subscribers see an icon of their car displayed on a map in real time, with a written address and time and date stamp.
Vehicle Location Alert can send a daily email or text message to the subscriber at a predetermined time with the vehicle location.
Touted as a way for parents to keep track of young drivers on the road, OnStar says Family Link enables safer monitoring by not bothering a driver behind the wheel with an unnecessary phone call, while still knowing their child is safe and on schedule. Parents can log on to the Family Link website and see where the car is currently. Subscribers with more than one vehicle using OnStar have the option of tracking multiple vehicles from the same screen. Conceivably this could have commercial applications, as well.
A phased national rollout begins mid-April to invited customers, and Family Link will add $3.99 to an OnStar subscription.
