Husqvarna recalls string and hedge trimmers for fuel leaks

Consumer Reports News: April 04, 2012 04:08 PM

Twenty-six thousand trimmers made by Husqvarna Professional Products have been recalled following seven reports to the company of fuel leaking from the fuel lines. The single affected string trimmer is the Husqvarna 122C, which Consumer Reports recently added to its Ratings for string trimmers. The recalled hedge trimmers are the 122HD60 and 122HD45. All models were sold for between $150 and $320 from May 2011 to January 2012 in Lowe's and Sears stores and at Husqvarna dealers.

Announced jointly by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Husqvarna, the problem is related to a rubber spacer that holds the fuel lines in the tank. Fuel can leak from this spacer, posing a fire hazard. "In our experience," said Consumer Reports program leader Peter Sawchuk, "whenever there's a problem with parts degradation in the path of the fuel, the problem is typically the fuel." He noted that other recent recalls over fuel leaks have had to do with the ethanol mixed in with the fuel, which we've reported can adversely affect small engines.

The 19,500 affected units of the Grass Trimmer Model 122C have serial numbers ranging from 2011 17 00001 to 2011 52 99999. The brand name Husqvarna and the model number are written on top of the tool, but the serial number is located on a black plate on the bottom of the muffler side of the tool. The 6,500 recalled Hedge Trimmers, models 122HD60 and 122HD45, have serial numbers ranging from 2011 17 00001 to 2011 52 99999. The brand name Husqvarna and the model number are written on top of the tool, but the serial number is located on a black plate on the gear box, on the lower portion of the tool.

Consumers should stop using the recalled trimmers and return them to the place of purchase for a free repair. You can also call Husqvarna toll-free at (877) 257-6921, visit www.husqvarna.com, or e-mail the company at recalls@husqvarna.com.
