Social-networking technology in laptops keeps you connected

Social networking is playing an ever-bigger part in our lives, both at work and at home. So it's no surprise that some new computers are getting more built-in features to help you stay in touch. Dell's XPS13-0015SLV Ultrabook, found in our latest laptop Ratings, is a case in point.

Dell's 13-inch Ultrabook includes Intel's Smart Connect technology. Smart Connect automatically updates social-media sites like Facebook and e-mail, even when your laptop is in sleep mode.

It's easy to set up Smart Connect. You'll find it in the Intel folder in the computer's Start/All Programs menu. Enable it by clicking on the Enable Updating button, then use the slider to indicate how often you want the computer to wake up and update.

The XPS13-0015SLV UltraBook has an aluminum/carbon-fiber case, weighs just 3 pounds, and is 0.7 inches thick. In our tests, battery life lasted 7.75 hours. Despite its size, the backlit keyboard was roomy and comfortable. The display's viewing angle wasn't among the best, but since it's a smaller screen it's not likely you'll have a lot of people trying to view it at the same time anyway.

Among the other new computers in our Ratings is Asus' latest netbook, the Eee PC Flare 1025C (reviewed here) and HP's Pavilion Slimline s5-1260. This compact desktop has a slim case, but it was a powerful performer with excellent ergonomics. Don't let the small case fool you: We found it had enough horsepower to play video games, which can be very demanding.
