Microsoft launches the Surface tablet computer

Microsoft today introduced a Windows tablet, called Surface. The 10.6-inch device weighs 1.5 pounds and is about 0.4 inches thick. One version will run on NVIDIDA's ARM processors with Windows RT, another on Intel's Ivy Bridge Core i5 with Windows 8. The first will come in 32GB and 64GB versions, the other in 64GB and 128GB. The company did not announce pricing or when the tablets would be available.

The devices will have a USB 2 port, HDMI, and front and rear cameras. A stand that looks to be about as thick as a credit card is built into the tablet, and there will also be covers that double as keyboards, one very thin and another with a built-in trackpad. The 1080p display is made of Gorilla Glass 2.0.

Of course, Microsoft has always been the software supplier, venturing into hardware manufacturing on only a few occasions, most notably the Xbox and Kinect. This is one of few times it's launched both the hardware and software for one of its products.
