Feds probe Infiniti JX35 over brake concerns

The new Infiniti JX35 sport-utility vehicle has come under scrutiny by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Two consumer complaints to the safety agency allege the intelligent brake assist system on the 2013 JX35 unexpectedly brought the Infiniti SUV to a complete and unwanted stop.

The 2013 Infiniti JX35 is a brand-new three-row SUV model. And like the model Consumer Reports just bought for testing, some versions of the 2013 model year SUV come with a so-called Driver Assistance Package that can automatically apply the vehicle's brakes based on its on-board radar system sensors.

A Nissan spokesman told the New York Times that the company does not view the two reported incidents as a "safety issue" since "the braking is controlled and the brake lamps illuminate to alert the drivers behind the vehicle."

However, engineers at Nissan and the NHTSA have opened a preliminary evaluation to determine the need for a deeper investigation—and possible safety recall—of the roughly 8,000 Infiniti JX35 sport-utility vehicles.
