New cordless phones offer greater range, more convenience features

Cordless phones have been getting thinner and sleeker to compete with cell phones, which are increasingly becoming the primary telecom devices for the home as well as on the go. But some new models are targeted at users who don't want a home phone with a tiny handset and minuscule keypad and display.

A number of the models in our recently updated Ratings have large buttons and displays that are easier to read, and a corded handset at the base, which is great for households prone to power outages. Some phones, such as the Uniden D3098 ($80), have louder ringers, voice-volume boosters, and visual and audio alerts. All these features enhance usability, especially for anyone with impaired hearing or vision.

Overall, new cordless phones are much better than the models of yore. For example, they transmit their signals using DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication) technology, which gives these phones greater range within and outside the home and longer talk times (more than 20 hours, in some cases). DECT also eliminates the interference problems that plagued earlier analog and digital models. To extend battery life, many new cordless models are smart enough to reduce radio power when they're near the base.

Some models, such as the Panasonic KX-TG9472B ($180), can handle two separate phone lines—a plus if you have a chatty family or run a small business from home. This Panasonic also has a USB port to let you import phone numbers and other contact information from your computer. Other useful features, found on the Panasonic KX-TG7742S ($90), include Bluetooth capability, which lets you use a wireless headset and even use the cordless phone for cell calls.
