Nikon has announced two new cameras: One is an improved advanced mirrorless cameras (or SLR-like), and the other a point-and-shoot with a long zoom—two of the strongest trends we're seeing in digital cameras lately.
The 10-megapixel Nikon 1 J2 ($550 with the 10-30mm kits lens) is an advanced SLR-like camera that has many of the same specs as its predecessor, the Nikon 1 J1 but includes several new features. It has a new creative mode that includes various scene modes, such as night landscape, panorama, and backlighting modes. Its display has more dots (921,000), which should make the LCD sharper. And Nikon has added a feature called Retraction: each time you retract or extend the lens to its closed or open position, you can automatically turn the camera body off or on, respectively.
The 16-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L610 subcompact (about $250) includes a long 14x optical zoom lens (25-350mm), 3-inch LCD, HD-resolution video capability, and a stylish camera body. It also runs on two AA batteries, which can be convenient when you travel.
Along with the two new models, Nikon announced two additional products: A new lens—the 11-27.5mm f3.5-5.6 lens ($190)—is a smaller, lighter, shorter lens designed for its Nikon 1 SLR-like models (the V1, J1, and J2). And the company also has a new WP-N1 underwater housing or case ($750) for all Nikon 1 models that lets you submerge these advanced cameras down to a depth of 130 feet.
The two cameras and lens will be available in early September.
