The company that pioneered e-book readers, only to see its devices eclipsed by generally superior models from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, today launched the new Sony Reader PRS-T2.

This new Sony e-book reader closely resembles the current model from Sony, the Reader PRS-T1, with a 6-inch e-ink screen and availability in multiple colors (white, red, and matte black). It also costs the same, $130—which is now quite pricey compared with the $80-to-$100 price tags for some Amazon Kindles and B&N Nooks.

Sony claims it has upgraded this Reader's e-ink screen to enhance touch and to provide more "paperlike page turns, improved continuous page turns," and smoother zooming in and out. The company says it's easier to organize and find books, too, and has upped battery life to "up to two months"—though we don't put much importance on battery life for e-ink devices, since all offer more-than-ample run times.

The new Reader's weight and dimensions are unchanged from its predecessor (6 7/8 x 4 3/8 x 3/8 inches (H/W/D), meaning that like the older one, the PRS-T2 will be one of the lighter and thinner e-book readers on the market.

Other enhancements include the ability to post passages of books directly to Facebook (which is new to Sony but is a feature on some other brands) and the ability to save Web content for later reading to the online app Evernote.

We expect to receive and test the Sony PRS-T2 any day now, and we'll add it to our e-book reader Ratings soon.
