General Motors has issued a recall for 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic cars today. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a defect may inadvertently prevent the cars' front air bags from deploying during collisions.
NHTSA's safety bulletin warns that a small bar in the air bag modules of the GM small cars may short circuit the electronics of the safety system and cause a failure to deploy. This increases the risk of injury to the front drivers. And according to NHTSA, the issue may affect nearly 3,000 owners of Chevrolet Sonic cars, Cruze vehicles and upscale twin, the Buick Verano.
It's unclear when GM will notify affect owners of the safety recall. But the company is expected to replace the car's steering wheel air bag coil free of charge.
For more information, consumers can call GM's toll-free customer support line (800-521-7300) and reference the company's internal recall campaign number, 12261.
