OWT Industries has recalled 254,600 Homelite electric leaf blowers and 131,500 Expert Gardener leaf blowers because objects drawn into the blower during vacuum mode can break through the plastic housing, posing a laceration hazard.

We tested the recalled Homelite UT42120 leaf blower, but not the Expert Gardener model.

The recalled Homelite leaf blowers were sold at Home Depot, from February through December 2012, for $40. The Expert Gardener blowers (shown below) were sold at Walmart, from January through December 2012, also for $40. No injuries have been reported to OWT Industries in relation to either recall.

If you're shopping for a new leaf blower, consult our Buying guide and Ratings to find a model that will work for your lawn-care needs.

The Homelite recall involves electric leaf blowers with two model and serial number ranges: Model UT42120 with serial numbers BMP3540001 through BMR2103100; and model UT42120A with serial numbers BMR2120001 through BMR3421250. Model and serial numbers are on a label on the left side of the red motor housing. "Homelite BlowerVac 2 Speed Powerful 220 MPH" is printed on the side of the motor housing and on the black plastic blower tube.

The Expert Gardener recall also involves leaf blowers with two model and serial number ranges: Model 20254EG with serial numbers BMP3010001 through BMR3311972; and model 20254EGC with serial numbers EUP3120001 through EUP3630730. Model and serial numbers are on a label on the left side of the motor housing. "Expert Gardener" and "BlowerVac 2 Speed Quiet 150 MPH Powerful 220 MPH" are printed on the side of the green motor housing and on the black plastic blower tube.

To get a free replacement of either recalled leaf blower, call OWT Industries (800-597-9624, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET) or go to homelite.com or expertgardenertools.com, depending on which leaf blower you own.
