Five healthy hamburger toppings

Try these good-for-you condiments on your Super Bowl burgers

Last updated: February 01, 2016 06:00 AM

Planning on serving up some hamburgers for the big game? A burger doesn't have to be piled high with bacon and cheddar cheese to be extra tasty. Our in-house food experts recommend the five healthy hamburger toppings shown below, and suggest trying them not only with beef, but also with veggie burgers—as well as with ground turkey, bison, chicken, lamb, or fish. Those options often contain fewer calories and fat than beef.

Mango chutney. For about 30 calories per tablespoon, you'll add a flavorful kick to lamb burgers.

Kimchi. These Korean pickled vegetables add a fat-free, pungent kick, especially on beef and poultry burgers. (See our advice on what to look for in ground turkey.)

Fire-roasted red bell pepper. You'll get a shot of vitamins A and C at less than 5 calories per tablespoon.

Chimichurri sauce. Its spicy blend of onion, garlic, parsley, vinegar, and olive oil wakes up any type of burger for just 50 calories a tablespoon.

Tzatziki sauce. You can buy this spicy yogurt sauce ready-made or DIY. It's great on lamb burgers and is only 15 calories a tablespoon.
