Samsung shows 55-inch Ultra HD OLED TVs

Combines OLED and UHD technologies plus curved or flat screens

Samsung: OLED plus UHD in one TV

For money-is-no-object TV buyers torn between an OLED TV and an Ultra HD (UHD) set, Samsung is making your life a bit easier: Just get an Ultra HD OLED TV.

Samsung's new TV, announced at the IFA European trade show last week, combines the extra detail enabled by the higher (3840x2160) resolution of a UHD TV, with the deep blacks, LCD-like brightness, and unlimited viewing angles of an OLED set. During the event, Samsung showed curved and flat versions of the 55-inch TV, but didn't disclose when it might arrive here in the U.S. or its expected price. Consumer Reports recently tested Samsung's KN55S9C 1080p OLED TV, priced at $9,000, and called it perhaps the best TV we've ever reviewed.

Joining the UHD OLED sets on display were several Ultra HD TVs, which ranged in size from 55- and 65-inch models that have curved screens, to a new 98-inch S9-series model, the bigger brother to the company's 85-inch UN85S9 model that is currently available.  No price was announced, but presumably it will be more expensive than the 85-inch set, which is selling for $40,000.

Earlier this summer Samsung introduced 55- and 65-inch Ultra HD TVs in a new F9000 series. Those sets are priced at $5,500 and $7,500, respectively. Unlike the UHD sets previewed at IFA, these models have flat screens.
