A production Hyundai Tucson for the zombie apocalypse. Really.

From AMC's "The Walking Dead."

In conjunction with the LA Auto Show, Hyundai introduced a limited-edition Tucson SUV inspired by "The Walking Dead." Hyundai has had prime product placement on the show with a humble Tucson proving key to the survival for the heroes. Or at least some of them.

The special trim package commemorates the 10th anniversary for the comic book series that inspired the show, but, in reality, it smartly capitalizes on the major interest that this serial drama continues to generate. Shame they missed a Halloween release.

The Walking Dead edition comes Ash Black, much like zombie blood, accented with red graphics. It will be offered strictly in AWD—the only drivetrain choice for serious apocalypse hopefuls.

Like a crazed biker, the interior is dressed in black leather. The cabin features custom floor and cargo mats, sure to impress your passengers en route to Comic-Con. Hyperbole aside, this is mostly a stock vehicle. But it does include a 72-hour survival backpack, ensuring there is a go-bag always at the ready.

I do question the standard roof rack. Positioned as a means to secure cargo, it could also provide grab handles for “walkers” or stranded Woodbury outcasts. Based on the show, a crossbow and katana would have been welcomed.

As a fan of the show and genre, I applaud Hyundai for taking the risk and offering this model. It is a far better promotional tie in than the Mad Maxed Elantra it has been hyping, as it literally connects to the show and is practical along the zombie apocalypse theme. Perhaps Hyundai was also running short of supercharged V8s.

That said, I’m still partial to a Jeep for surviving World War Z.
