The Buick Enclave is a large car-based three-row SUV with plenty of room, a comfortable ride, and nice interior. It's been five years since we last tested the Enclave, so we decided to check out the freshened 2014 version fitted with the latest features. The Enclave retains the previously lauded virtues, but poor fuel economy, a small infotainment screen, the placement of some controls, and a key ignition start to show the SUV's age.
The 3.6-liter V6 engine remains the same and returns a dismal 15 mpg overall in our tests. Other similar SUVs such as the Dodge Durango get 2 to 3 mpg more.
We like the Enclave's comfortable ride, quiet cabin, and responsive, secure handling. Many competitors have a larger infotainment screen, leaving the Enclave's looking dated and small. The 2014 model has a standard backup camera, which is helpful because the Enclave is a long vehicle and the rear window has very limited visibility. Other new, welcomed safety options include forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning.
Inside, families will enjoy the plush roomy interior, comfortable seats and third-row that can fit adults, which is rare in this class. Storage is generous and the second and third-row fold to increase cargo space.
