Toyota's car of the future doesn't run on gas

Production version of fuel-cell vehicle breaks cover

    Published: June 27, 2014 05:15 PM

Although it will only be sold in California, Toyota decided to finally unveil the production version of its fuel-cell vehicle in Aspen, Colo., this week. As promised, it looks just like the concept version of the car, only a different color, and with big taillights that meet federal requirements.

Toyota says the fuel-cell car will have a range of 300 miles on a five-minute fill-up and go 100 miles per hour. We got a chance to drive a fairly early prototype and found it pretty seamless, if not that engaging.

The five-passenger sedan is expected to go on sale in California late this year, once the state has time to build out more of the 60 hydrogen fueling stations it has under way. Pricing has not been announced, but it is selling in Japan for $69,000. Hyundai's Tuscon Fuel Cell Vehicle went on sale in the state this month, and Honda has also promised to release its next fuel-cell vehicle in the state this summer.
