The Hisense Dual Zone FC-33DT1HA is the only stand-alone chest freezer with a smaller soft-freeze chamber that can be set anywhere from 21° to 50° F. Exclusive to Lowe's, the $360 freezer is a nice option if you need some more storage space for frozen foods, plus a little extra something for ice cream, soda, and the like.
Convertible refrigerator/freezer compartments are a growing trend. Our top-rated four-door refrigerator, the Samsung Chef Collection RF34H9960S4, $5,400, features a lower chamber that can be used as either a freezer or refrigerator. The Hisense Dual Zone is a much more basic piece of cooling equipment, as you might expect from its low price. And it's on the small side, with just 9 cubic feet of usable capacity, compared with the 20-plus cubic feet we see inside other manual-defrost chest freezers.
But it earned solid marks in our tests, scoring an excellent for temperature performance and a very good for energy efficiency. It might have even made our recommended list, if not for the fact that it's slightly louder than other models. But that won't be an issue if you plan to keep the freezer in the basement, garage, or other utilitarian part of the home. The Hisense Dual Zone FC-33DT1HA freezer also has several helpful convenience features, including digital controls, adjustable wire storage baskets and a water drain that can be used during manual defrosting.
Bottom line: Provided your storage needs are fairly modest, and they include ice cream and other soft-freeze items, this Dual Zone freezer is worth a look.
