In an effort to eliminate blind spots, Jaguar/Land Rover has launched a research project aimed at making the car's pillars visually disappear.
Using video cameras mounted outside the car, a windshield head-up display, and the interior roof pillar surfaces as projection screens, the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen system would help drivers see whatever might be lurking out of their line of sight.
The windshield display could also act as a display for blind-spot warnings to alert drivers of the movements of other vehicles. By connecting the display to the cloud, the windshield could also provide information such as area gas prices and parking availability right in the driver's line of sight.
The goal of the 360-degree Virtual Urban Windscreen system is to provide as much information and visibility as possible, without the driver taking their eyes off the road. This also includes a "ghost" car to provide navigation guidance. Like in video games, the driver would follow this semi-transparent car displayed so as to appear on the road ahead, rather than glance down at a map display for directions.
No production availability or cost has been announced.
