Want a coffee maker that can brew more than a regular cup of joe? It may be time for you to get a combination coffee maker, a multifunction appliance that lets you whip up not only a cup of coffee (or in some cases a carafe) but also lattes, cappuccinos, and even iced coffee.
“Since Ninja introduced its Coffee Bar line in 2015, most of the larger brands now offer some type of combination or all-in-one coffee maker,” says Nish Suvarnakar, a CR market analyst who covers coffee makers. “Consumers shouldn’t have trouble finding the combination models that meet their preferences.”
Below, in alphabetical order, are seven of the best combination coffee makers from CR’s tests. Learn more—and explore more than 100 brewers—in our coffee maker buying guide and complete coffee maker ratings.
The Instant Dual Pod Plus is compatible with both K-Cup and Nespresso capsules. It works with ground coffee in the included reusable pod. You can use its “bold” feature to create pour-over iced coffee by filling a cup with ice cubes and your choice of milk, too. It delivers coffee quickly, receiving top ratings for both first-cup speed and repeat speed in our tests. It’s also fairly easy to use, clean, and adjust the brew strength. This coffee maker comes with an auto-shutoff function, a removable reservoir, and a height-adjustable drip tray.
Like the Instant Dual Pod Plus, this Instant Multi-Pod 68 MB uses built-in K-Cup, Nespresso capsules, and ground coffee to make a coffee or an espresso. Though it receives only one top mark (for size consistency), it performs respectably in every other category—from first-cup speed to temperature consistency. Plus, it comes with an auto-shutoff function, a removable reservoir, and a height-adjustable drip tray.
What sets the Keurig K-Café Smart apart from the rest of the single-serve makers is its WiFi connectivity. Through the Keurig app, you can control this coffee maker remotely with your smartphone. In addition, it delivers superb results in our tests for brewing range, convenience, size consistency, and first-cup speed. It can make a variety of drinks—drip, latte, and cappuccino, among others. This machine, which uses K-Cup pods, also has a removable reservoir, a height-adjustable drip tray, and auto-shutoff.
The Nespresso Essenza Mini is our top-rated single-serve coffee maker that has the ability to brew three types of coffee—lungo (an Italian-style coffee), espresso, and ristretto (a more concentrated espresso)—and it’s one of the most compact we’ve tested, too. It stands out with an excellent rating for first-cup speed, repeat-cup speed, and cup-size consistency, as well as for brewing range, which means you have plenty of control over the strength of your brew. It has a removable water reservoir, a height-adjustable drip tray, and an auto-off function. Like other Nespresso models, it requires Nespresso capsules, which the company recycles at no charge.
With its built-in milk frother, the Nespresso CitiZ EN267BAE takes single-serve coffee to the next level. It’s great for hosting events, considering it aces CR’s tests for speed and size consistency. This machine requires a bit more maintenance because of the milk frother, but if you love your morning latte, it’s a quick and easy way to get your fix, too.
If you’re a fan of Nespresso’s proprietary coffee capsules, there’s also the Nespresso by DeLonghi Lattissima One Espresso Maker EN500BW/W. Using Nespresso OriginalLine capsules, this machine can brew coffee and espresso as well as lattes and cappuccinos using a built-in milk frother and a tank that dispenses milk foam right into your cup.
