Best Black Friday Amazon Electronics Deals

CR's picks of the best deals on Echo smart speakers, Fire tablets, and more

    Amazon Echo Dot Amazon

If last year was any indication, Amazon is worth keeping an eye on for consumers hunting for electronics deals the weekend after Thanksgiving.

But Black Friday is coming early at Amazon. A host of products are already available on the Black Friday section of the website, and the retailer will be releasing additional deals every day until Black Friday, with a focus on the company's own products like Echo, Fire, and Kindle devices.

More Electronics Devices & Holiday Deals

Consumers who shop using an Alexa device will get earlier access to a few of these bargains starting on Nov. 17 by asking “Alexa, what are my deals?” or visiting a special Amazon link. You'll also be able to pick up an Amazon Smart plug for just $5 with the purchase of any Echo device starting on Thanksgiving.

Don't forget that deals may overlap at other retailers. Target is even offering free two-day shipping with no minimum purchase until Dec. 22, rivaling Amazon's usual advantage. If you've got your eyes on a particular product, it's best to shop around before you click buy.

Here are our picks for the best Black Friday deals at Amazon that will be available in the days leading up to the shopping holiday. As always, keep in mind that some products may be available in limited quantities.

    Echo Devices

Echo Plus, $110 Starting Thanksgiving Day (Early Access with Alexa)
Amazon will be offering a $40 savings on the new Echo Plus, which has a large, 3-inch woofer designed to deliver stronger bass to accompany clearer midrange and high tones compared to previous Echo models. The Plus also includes a Zigbee smart hub which allows for easier integration with other smart home devices.

Echo, $69 Starting Thanksgiving Day (Early Access with Alexa)
The second-generation Echo smart speaker will be on sale for a $31 discount starting on Thanksgiving. For smart home die-hards, you can save an addition $50 if you buy two. You can also pick up an Echo bundled with a Philips Hue Color Starter kit for $100, half off the normal price. Consumer Reports' testers found this Echo to be easy to use but unimpressive in sound quality.

Echo Dot, $24 Starting Thanksgiving Day (Early Access with Alexa)
The recently released Echo Dot will be half-price starting on Nov. 22, and you can score a fairly significant savings by bundling an Echo Dot with one of two Philips Hue Starter Kits. The second-generation Dot will also be on sale for just $20 the same day. The speaker's own sound isn't great but the idea for music lovers is to pair it with a Bluetooth speaker.

Echo Show, $180 Starting Thanksgiving Day (Early Access with Alexa)
Starting on Thanksgiving Day, Amazon will cut $50 from the regular price on the revamped Show, which features a 10-inch HD touch screen and a built-in smart-home hub. The company also redesigned the internal speakers, promising improvement in sound quality.

Echo Spot, $90 Starting Thanksgiving Day (Early Access with Alexa)
Amazon is knocking $40 off the Spot’s regular selling price of $129. Our testers found the Spot to be easy to use but severely lacking in sound quality.

Echo Look, $50 on Thanksgiving Day
Amazon’s Alexa-enabled camera, which you can use to take pictures of your outfit and get AI-assisted style tips, will be on sale for just $50. We haven’t tested it, but this deal is a whopping $150 off the regular price.

    Tablets and E-Readers

Kindle Fire 7 Kids Edition, $70 Available Now
This is a special edition of the CR-tested 7-inch Kindle Fire 7, normally $100, that comes with a protective case, a two-year warranty, and one free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime Unlimited normally costs $3 per month and includes access to kid-friendly content like videos, games, and apps.

Kindle Fire HD 8 Kids Edition, $90 Available Now
The differences between the above 7-inch model and this 8-inch Kids Edition model are relatively minor beyond screen size, most notably an improved camera on the 8-inch model. Otherwise they’re the typical Amazon Fire tablet, which means they’re ideal for doing things like watching videos, reading books, and light “productive” work like browsing the web or using email. You can pick it up now for $40 off.

Kindle Fire 7, $30 on Thanksgiving Day
Unlike the Kids Edition versions this Kindle doesn't come with extras like a protective case or a free year of kid-friendly content, but it's otherwise the same. This deal knocks $20 off the usual price.

Kindle Fire HD 8, $50 on Thanksgiving Day
Amazon is knocking $30 off the 8-inch version of the non-Kids Fire, which comes without the Kids extras like a protective case and free year of kid-friendly content.

Kindle Fire HD 10, $100 Available Now
This is ideal for consumers who want the biggest screen possible in an Amazon tablet. Amazon’s Fire tablets tend to do well in our ratings, but are outpaced when it comes to pure speed and performance by other tablets like the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. This model normally sells for $150.

Kindle Fire HD 10 Kids Edition, $150 Available Now
You can save $50 on the Kids Edition of the Fire HD 10, which includes the aforementioned extras like a protective case and free year of kid-friendly content.

Kindle Paperwhite, $80 on Thanksgiving Day
A dedicated e-reader like this Amazon Kindle Paperwhite makes sense for consumers who don’t need their device to do things like check email or use apps. The Paperwhite is Amazon’s mainstream model—there are models that are both more and less expensive—and is likely a good choice for people who want an entire library’s worth of content in one small package. We haven’t tested this specific model, which usually sells for $120, but an older Paperwhite did very well in our ratings and it’s largely the same as the one on sale here. Our testers found no major problems but appreciated the long battery life and fast page turning speeds.

    Streaming Media Devices

Fire TV Stick, $25, Starting Nov. 18
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick (normalls $40) plugs into a HDMI port in your TV and lets you access an array of streaming video apps like Netflix, FuboTV, and Amazon’s own Prime Video service. Not all apps are available on all smart TVs, though, so a device like the Fire TV Stick may still be useful. We’ve tested this model, and it did very well in our ratings. Our testers appreciated features like the Alexa voice assistant being built into the remote control, letting you search for and launch content using your voice.

    Fire Stick 4K, $35, Starting Nov. 18
This is largely the same as the standard Fire Stick but works with 4K and HDR content. You can save $15 here, just make sure your TV supports 4K, or Ultra HD, before spending the extra money for this version. (Or, just buy this streaming device and upgrade your set—CR has picked out the best Black Friday TV deals to make that easier.)

Fire TV Cube, $60, Starting Nov. 18
This deal marks 50 percent off yet another streaming device that plugs into your TV and lets you stream video content. As our testers note, it’s essentially a powerful Fire TV that adds the full Alexa voice assistant, so you can ask for the weather and news in addition to sifting through video content. Like the Fire Stick 4K, the Cube can play 4K and HDR content.

Fire TV Recast, $180, Starting Nov. 18
This is a $50 discount on the new Fire TV Recast, a unique device that adds a TV tuner to the usual Fire streaming device. That means you can use it to tune into local, over-the-air broadcasts once you hook it up to an antenna, which you have to supply yourself. This is useful for cord cutters because not only do they get access to the wide library of Fire TV streaming apps, but they can also tune into and record live local broadcasts.
